The aim&nbsp;is to&nbsp;understand challenges&nbsp;related to health and well-being&nbsp;of informal workers and informal settlement dwellers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Project Site: Indore, Madhya Pradesh&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"background\">Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian informal workforce contributes&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalacademies.org\/hmd\/reports\/2015\/approaches-to-universal-health-coverage.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50% of country\u2019s GDP<\/a>&nbsp;and accounts&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nationalacademies.org\/hmd\/reports\/2015\/approaches-to-universal-health-coverage.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&gt;94% of India\u2019s workforce.<\/a>&nbsp;With rapid urbanisation, slum and&nbsp;urban informal settlement dwellers are the fastest growing segment of India\u2019s population.&nbsp;Urban contribution to India\u2019s GDP is&nbsp;70-75% according to&nbsp;Barclays&nbsp;2017&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.business-standard.com\/article\/news-cm\/urban-population-to-contribute-70-75-of-india-s-gdp-by-2020-barclays-114032000273_1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>.&nbsp;International Labour&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/wcmsp5\/groups\/public\/---ed_dialogue\/---sector\/documents\/publication\/wcms_208090.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Organisation<\/a>&nbsp;(ILO)&nbsp;estimates that&nbsp;85% of&nbsp;women and 83% of men are in informal&nbsp;urban, employment&nbsp;in India.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Informal sector populations confront&nbsp;many&nbsp;challenges as they are&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2753358\" target=\"_blank\">unseen<\/a>&nbsp;by most service providers,&nbsp;lack&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/0956247810379937\" target=\"_blank\">basic infrastructure<\/a>&nbsp;of paved roads or adequate drainage,&nbsp;face&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(05)71049-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\">poor living conditions<\/a>&nbsp;characterised by space congestion,&nbsp;poor sanitation and low access to water.&nbsp;Informal workers&nbsp;face risk&nbsp;of injury,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1539\/joh.45.351\" target=\"_blank\">physiological challenges<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4963551\/\" target=\"_blank\">high temperatures<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29189970\" target=\"_blank\">climate change<\/a>. While policies like the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nhm.gov.in\/images\/pdf\/NUHM\/Implementation_Framework_NUHM.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">National Urban Health Mission (NUHM)<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/cities\/mumbai\/news\/Maharashtra-failed-its-urban-poor-says-report-by-Centre\/article14471599.ece\" target=\"_blank\">labour ministry policies<\/a>&nbsp;have&nbsp;provisions&nbsp;for services and&nbsp;social benefits for informal workers, policy implementation is id=\"informal-worker-and-settlement-dwellers-in-indore\">Informal Worker and Settlement Dwellers in Indore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Indore is&nbsp;India\u2019s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census2011.co.in\/census\/city\/299-indore.html\" target=\"_blank\">14<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;largest<\/a>&nbsp;city by population home to nearly&nbsp;9,00,000 slum populations as estimated by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.iied.org\/pdfs\/10777IIED.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">UHRC.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;Indore is a successful industrial&nbsp;and commercial&nbsp;hub,&nbsp;home to a very large number of informal workers and informal settlement residents.&nbsp;Seasonal migrants often work at brick kilns and construction sites.&nbsp;With climate change&nbsp;Indore is&nbsp;becoming increasingly&nbsp;drought-prone area and facing severe water stress, putting&nbsp;vulnerable populations at&nbsp;high&nbsp;risk.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"what-research-is-being-undertaken\">What research is being undertaken?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study&nbsp;is being&nbsp;conducted&nbsp;with&nbsp;informal&nbsp;workers and informal&nbsp;settlement&nbsp;dwellers of Indore.&nbsp;UHRC&nbsp;is&nbsp;working&nbsp;in partnership with slum-based women\u2019s groups&nbsp;who have gained an intimate knowledge of vulnerable slum clusters&nbsp;from&nbsp;community-driven upgrading and&nbsp;improvement projects in Indore slums.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;coronavirus pandemic has affected millions of informal sector workers.&nbsp;Through this research, we are also aiming to build our understanding the impacts of COVID-19 induced lockdown&nbsp;on the health and well-being of informal sector workers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using&nbsp;qualitative interviews and key-informant interviews, we&nbsp;are&nbsp;assessing&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>occupational, environmental, and climate&nbsp;related health and well-being risks&nbsp;of&nbsp;informal workers&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li>What doable approaches are being used and may be used by informal workers&nbsp;and informal settlement dwellers&nbsp;to mitigate&nbsp;risks,&nbsp;overcome challenges&nbsp;and build resilience?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\">\n<li>What are the secondary impacts of COVID-19 on health, food security, nutrition and children\u2019s education and how are informal sector workers and settlement dwellers coping with the situation?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sample<\/strong>: The study&nbsp;sample&nbsp;comprises of&nbsp;factory workers,&nbsp;casual workers (daily wage construction workers and peri-urban agricultural workers), home based workers, street vendors, domestic workers, slum youth working in informal sector.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultations with&nbsp;stakeholders,&nbsp;including&nbsp;Government frontline workers&nbsp;from the Dept. of Public Health and Family Welfare and Integrated Child Development Services,&nbsp;elected Ward representatives,&nbsp;women group members and active women from slums and informal settlements&nbsp;are being&nbsp;conducted to&nbsp;understand challenges&nbsp;and&nbsp;possible solutions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our recommendations will be shared with government officials, interdisciplinary researchers&nbsp;and urban practitioners at local,&nbsp;national and global platforms.
