Women present drama at Urban Health Resource Centre’s awareness event

I am dying of abdominal pain, I will die. Ok, let me take you to the ‘baba’ who is here. O ‘baba’ please give her a medicine such that she delivers a boy. In the meantime a trained health volunteer comes from the nearby slum and advises the women to take the pregnant lady to the nearby government health center.

As part of Urban Health Resource Center ‘s program awareness presented by basti women’s groups by way of nukkad natak (street plays) and health songs woven around folk tunes and hindi film songs, women presented the messages regarding appropriate care of pregnant and lactating mothers and infants and children in a very interesting way. The stage events presented by women’s groups and children’s groups were enjoyed by all the 500 basti women and children gathered at the venue. Mr Vinay Shankar Pandey, Nagar Ayukt (Municipal Commissioner) inaugurated the program and said that such large conclaves should be held periodically so that women from the bastis can feel enthused and carry on their efforts. He appreciated the initiative of UHRC and said that for better development of Agra city women’s groups can play an important role. He urged the women to bring forth the challenges faced in their respective bastis and inform him about the same. He also said that each month he would keep one to two days aside for meeting with women’s groups to better understand the situation in the bastis. Several guests representing various major initiatives and programmes and officials from the civic administration in Agra joined the event and expressed their solidarity with the cause and appreciated the programme efforts in Agra bastis. Guests included Rashmi Mohanty, Pratibha Pandey and Dr Sunita Bhagya from Urban Health Initiative coordinated by Family Health International,, Mr Anuj Kr Srivastava from Population Services International Delhi, Mr Amritanshu , Mr Farouque from UNICEF, Agra, Mr J.S. Khera, Agra Industrialist and Social Worker, Dr Subhadra Menon, Population Foundation of India, Delhi, Mr Dwijendra Pant, Dr. Siddharth Agrawal.
